Why Is My Dog Vomiting?

Unfortunately, dogs and other pets are prone to stomach aches just like humans. As a result, dogs, cats, and other pets may experience vomiting, diarrhea, and other digestive problems. Sometimes, the vomiting is the result of a minor stomach bug and will clear up on its own. Other times, it could be a sign that your pet is suffering from a more serious issue. Our veterinarian at University Parkway Animal Hospital in Jackson has put together some information about what may affect your dog’s stomach and when veterinary care is needed.

When to Take Your Dog to an Animal Hospital

You have probably had your own stomach aches at one point or another. Quite likely, most of those stomach issues cleared up on their own. The same is true with pets. Often, their stomach problems will clear up after a day or two. However, sometimes pet emergency care or veterinary treatment is necessary.

First, if you believe your pet may have swallowed something dangerous, such as indigestible objects like coins or dangerous chemicals (i.e. antifreeze), you should seek emergency pet care right away. Time may be of the essence and mere minutes could determine life or death.

Aside from that, if you notice blood in your pet’s vomit, it is wise to speak with a veterinarian. The same is true regarding your pet’s stool. Blood is often a sign of a serious health issue and emergency dog care may be needed.

Furthermore, if your dog continues to vomit for more than 12 hours or skips more than one meal, you should contact a veterinarian. If your pet suffers from diarrhea for more than 24 hours and skips more than one meal, you should also check in with a vet at an animal hospital.

Even if you do not notice blood or your dog has only been vomiting for a few hours, if something seems wrong, you should trust your instincts and contact a veterinarian. If your dog or other pet is extremely lethargic, acting oddly, seems to be in pain, or otherwise causes concern, it is best to be safe rather than sorry. Finally, if vomiting is a frequent and reoccurring issue, speak with a veterinarian. It may be due to a food allergy or another issue that must be addressed.
