Pet Dermatology with our Veterinarians in Jackson, TN

Pet skin conditions are unfortunately a common problem. Some pet allergies can cause excessive scratching, chewing, and licking and fidgeting, which makes life uncomfortable for your pet. Some skin conditions in pets may also cause hair loss and painful lesions that can become infected if not treated appropriately. Here are some of the most common causes of skin problems that our Jackson veterinarians treat here at University Parkway Animal Hospital.

Environmental Causes

Dogs, as well as cats, may sometimes develop sensitivity to lawn grasses, which may produce excessive itching. When moisture gets trapped in your pet’s skin it may also cause skin lesions to develop, which are known as hot spots. These hot spots are especially common to pets with thick coats and coats that are prone to matting. Environmentally induced skin conditions can be caused by dust, pollen, mold, mildew and other airborne allergens, which can make your pet itchy, uncomfortable and may result in painful lesions as well as hair loss.

Nutritional Causes

Food allergies, though fairly rare in pets, are usually caused by the proteins that pork, beef, chicken, eggs, lamb, and fish contain. Food allergies may also be due to plant-based proteins from wheat. The most common nutritional causes are due to dairy, wheat, and beef. The primary symptoms of pet skin allergies relating to nutritional problems are excessive scratching and skin irritation, but you may also notice digestive problems, such as diarrhea or vomiting.

Parasitic Causes

Pets can develop an allergic reaction to flea bites, which is an immune response to the saliva of fleas, known as parasitic dermatitis. This type of allergic reaction can cause inflammation, excessive itching and hair loss. Although the most common cause of parasitic dermatitis is fleas, it is important to note that tick bites can also trigger an allergic reaction in pets. Unfortunately, the exact cause of parasitic dermatitis in pets may be hard to pinpoint, because pets are also prone to skin problems from various types of mites or scabies. If treating your pets fleas and tricks at home do not do the trick, it is important to take them to a dog dermatologist or pet skin veterinary for an exam.

The good news is parasitic dermatitis is the easiest type of skin condition to deal with, so if you suspect the itching and scratching are due to fleas, arrange for a pet skin veterinary appointment to discuss the best type of treatment and preventative for your pet.
