What to Expect After Orthopedic Surgery for Your Pet

Sometimes, pets need surgery. You might be surprised by how your pet responds to surgery. Our veterinarian at University Parkway Animal Hospital in Jackson would like to discuss what you can expect after orthopedic surgery for your pet.

Orthopedic Surgery

Check whether your pet will stay overnight. If so, you want to keep in mind that your pet might be lethargic and eat little to no food after the surgery. These side effects of anesthesia are quite common. Your pet should still be thirsty and you can encourage him to eat with broth. Your pet's appetite and energy will gradually return in a few days.

Changes in waste elimination are also common. Your pet may not use the bathroom often. Dr. Lifsey will have you monitor your pet's bowel movements. You should also go with your pet to ensure he doesn't irritate his incisions when he uses the bathroom.

Post-Op Instructions

Visiting our animal hospital in Jackson and receiving an anesthetic disrupts your pet’s routine and can cause him to seek shelter. It is normal if your pet heads to his bed, kennel, or a quiet corner of your home. You can help your pet feel safe by giving him space from your other pets and children. Consider placing his food and water dishes or litter box near a safe spot for his convenience.

Surgery can leave your pet inflamed and in pain, so expect to administer medication after the procedure. Our veterinarian will provide dosage instructions. Be prepared for your pet to reject medications and offer snacks or treats to disguise them. Your furry friend will likely need some rest after the procedure. Our veterinarian will provide a timetable of when you can expect your pet to return to normal.
