Symptoms of a Skin Problem

Your dog may be suffering from a skin issue if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling and inflammation, especially if it isn't localized to a single area
  • Redness
  • Hair loss and bald patches
  • Excessive scratching, licking or biting
  • Rashes, scabs, or open lesions
  • Scaly or flaky skin
  • Small lumps or bumps in the skin

Common Causes

One of the most common causes of canine skin problems parasite infestation. Fleas are a common source here in TN, but ticks and mites are also potential sources of skin irritation. Sometimes the infestation isn't immediately obvious, particularly with the tiny mites that cause mange. Ringworm is another common parasite that affects the skin. It's highly contagious but usually easy to clear up.

Allergies are also a common culprit. Many dogs become itchy due to an allergic reaction, which may lead to which leads to excessive licking and chewing. Food allergies are most common, but some dogs have contact allergies.

Dry skin can also cause some of these problems. Some dog breeds are more prone to it than others, however. Make sure your dog is staying hydrated, especially during the warmer months. If dry skin persists, contact our veterinarian.

Infections and disease can also cause skin problems. Yeast infections are the most common and are usually easy to clear up, but they can hint at underlying issues. Regular veterinary checkups are essential for detecting skin issues and providing prompt treatment.
